Two CSC students excel at international English honor society convention

 Sigma Tau Delta is an International English Honor Society, and the CSC chapter has been active for many years, according to CSC English department chair Dr. Matt Evertson.

Clark, a junior from Littleton, Colo., presented a paper in a panel entitled "Doubles in Mrs. Dalloway.” The title of her paper was "The Heat o' the Sun: Suicide in Mrs. Dalloway”. Mrs. Dalloway is a novel by Virginia Woolf that details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fictional high-society woman in post-World War I England.

A double major in drama/performance, Clark also served as the chair of a session entitled "Latin American Literature”.

Labor, a senior from Hot Springs, S.D., presented an original story in a panel entitled "Original Fiction: Reassessing Relationships”. The title of her story was "Combat Practice”. She also served as chair of a session entitled "Original Fiction: River Crossings”.

Clark was elected to the governing body as the High Plains Region Student Representative.

Her duties will include attending the Sigma Tau Delta Board meeting in September, presenting concerns and achievements of members of Sigma Tau Delta High Plains chapters in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Colorado and helping organize the next international conference.

“I listened to two amazing authors, Alison Bechdel and Daniel Mendelsohn, speak on their work and ideas. I joined my fellow deltans in a ‘Bad Poetry’ reading. The latter event was hilarious, and the rest of the conference, including the exploration of historic Savannah, opened my eyes to how many opportunities are available for those who love English. I feel far better about my future after being immersed in those supportive people,” Clark said.

English department chair Dr. Matt Evertson said, “These are major accomplishments for our students. We are very proud of them, and it is significant to have a school of our size not only send participants to the convention, but to have them read papers/stories that were vetted and then accepted against competing students from some major institutions across the globe. Our students are right in there.”

The students were accompanied to the conference by faculty sponsor Dr. Thomas Deane Tucker. Student travel expenses were funded by the English department and funds from the Campus Activity Board.
