Summer program for high school students begins on campus

 The students will live in CSC residence halls and attend classes on campus.

Dr. Maggie Smith-Bruehlman, CSC Upward Bound director, said a special feature this year is an essay contest. The six winning students will travel to Yellowstone Oct. 1-5 for a Yellowstone Association educational program about geology, natural history and wildlife.

CSC English faculty member Dr. Lee Miller will incorporate the Yellowstone theme in his writing class and select the winners who will be announced at the UB final banquet June 27.

Katie Patrick, a CSC graduate from Alliance, Nebraska, is returning for the sixth year as a group leader. New leaders joining her include April Stangle, also a CSC graduate, who will be teaching at Hay Springs High School this fall; Kyle Tarbutton a CSC junior majoring in communication arts from Columbus, Ohio; and Channing Jons of Newcastle, Wyoming, a CSC senior majoring in social science education.

The students and their families met the summer program’s staff Sunday evening during a picnic in the Student Center due to inclement weather.

The program, which began Monday, consists of classes including Chinese language, conflict resolution, choir, science adventures, yoga, literature, art, math, success planning and other topics, many which are taught by CSC faculty members and students.

Following morning lessons, students may choose from indoor or outdoor activities or study hall.

The students travel back to their homes each Friday afternoon and return to campus on Sunday evenings.

A highlight of the summer program will be a three-day trip to educational and cultural sites in the South Dakota Black Hills.

Five recent high school graduates in the UB program plan to attend CSC this fall. They are: Cristian Hulsey of Alliance, Cierra McKibben of Alliance, Elspeth Moon of Gordon, Angie Scherbarth of Chadron, and Maryline Watak of Chadron.
