Chadron State College tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders were recognized at a luncheon Dec. 9 in the Learning Center in the King Library.

 Tuesday, Dec. 9 was proclaimed Stephanie Bailey Day in honor of Bailey who has been a math tutor and SI Leader for seven semesters at CSC, according to Frances Gonzalez, coordinator of the Learning Center. The Rapid City, South Dakota, native is a secondary math education major who will be student teaching in Hill City, South Dakota, in the spring.

Chelsey Greene of Jewell, Kan., a math and family and consumer sciences tutor, and Kelsey Empfield of Scottsbluff, Neb., a writing assistant, were also honored.  Greene will be student teaching in Scottsbluff and Empfield in Banner County.

The Learning Center is certified under the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program. To receive certification, a tutor must receive a minimum of 10 hours of in-service training and provide 25 hours of hands on tutoring, according to Gonzalez.

Certified recipients recognized at the luncheon include Dylan Bairn of Scottsbluff, Neb., Elizabeth Bourk of Blunt, S.D., Garret Dockweiler of Oconto, Neb., Empfield, Taylor Kerns of Colorado Springs, Colo., Joslynn VanDerslice of Columbus, Neb. and Kira Stuhr of Bradshaw, Neb.

The following SI Leaders and their faculty were also honored: Scott Fraser of Lincoln, Neb., Organic Chemistry with Dr. Zachary Varpness; Sarah Blackstone of Castle Rock, Colo., Cellular Biology with Dr. Joyce Hardy; Molly Cleland of Sturgis, S.D., Chemistry II with Dr. Tim Keith; Ryan Head of Bushnell, Neb., Music Theory Foundations with Pamela Shuler; Morgan Schaeffer of Lewellen, Neb., Pre-Algebra with Barbara Waugh; and VanDerslice and Lacey Clarke of Berwyn, Neb., lab assistants for Earth Science and Range Plant Identification with Jennifer Balmat and Dr. Anthony Perlinski.

Learning Center Advisory Board members, members of the CSC administration, faculty and staff were also for their support of the Learning Center.
