Sandoz Center offers two research grants

The society is offering an annual research award of $1,000 for proposals that emphasize new insights on Mari Sandoz or ways to explore her life or her work.

The society hopes to encourage and rejuvenate interest in Mari Sandoz by offering this award, according to Sandoz Center Director Sarah Polak.

This call for research proposals is only open to undergraduate and graduate students. Possible topics include: feminism, American Indian issues, activism, environmental issues  and social/cultural issues.

An initial payment of $500 will be presented with the announcement of the award. The balance of $500 will be paid at the conference presentation in September. A complete proposal should be submitted electronically, as a single document, to: echase@windstream.net.

The second grant, funded by the Sallie Humphrey Voorhees endowment, has been in place for eight years and provides stipends in the form of grants for researchers using the archival resources of the Sandoz Center.

This award is open to all researchers who wish to use the Sandoz Center's holdings. Priority will be given to individual researchers or research teams from schools in the Chadron State College area, including Pine Ridge Reservation schools.

Funds may be used for travel to the center, lodging during travel and preservation of research project findings in various media formats.

The application form is available from Polak and will soon be available at: csc.edu/sandoz. Awards are made on a rolling basis. The current average award is $500.
