The Chadron State College Public Relations Club traveled to Minneapolis, Minn., recently to meet with public relations professionals from large companies.

While in Minneapolis, the club members toured Target Stadium, the home of the Minnesota Twins baseball team, learning the history and interesting facts about the stadium. Afterward, they talked with the PR and athletic marketing staff to learn about their marketing and public relations responsibilities and what students can expect in a professional PR position. The CSC students also took some personal time to watch a Twins baseball game.

Continuing with the hands-on experiences, the club members had a chance to speak with the PR and marketing staff at the Mall of America. Dan Jasper, the vice president of public relations for the Mall of America spoke to the group about marketing, public relations, and social communications. He expressed to the group that internships are something students should expect to complete in the PR line of work.

Justy Bullington of Mullen, Neb., said, “It was great to see what we've been learning in the classroom actually applied to the jobs we could be doing in the future. Ms. French has done an exceptional job at preparing us for the next step. Everything she has taught us was said by the Public Relations firms we met with. It's nice to know the material we are learning. Is applicable to our future profession."

The PR club also attended the National Student Advertising Competition at the University of Minnesota. The students observed the district competition in an attempt to decide if the PR club would participate next year.

To raise money for the trip, the club sold Subway tickets as a fundraiser.

CSC students on the trip were: James Bahensky of Anselmo, Neb., Arielle Boon of Buffalo, Wyo., Justy Bullington of Mullen, Neb., Cheyenne Deering of Wall, S.D., Bethany Kroetch of Philip, S.D., Miranda Miles of Gering, Neb., Megan O’Leary of Omaha, Jocelyn Romey of Oelrichs, S.D. and Casey Sigrist of Gering, Neb. They were accompanied by their faculty advisor Shaunda French.
