Malinda Linegar, an Information Technology specialist in the Institutional Research office at Chadron State College, presented at a national conference in Orlando, Florida, in June hosted by software company Information Builders.

CSC uses Information Builders' Web Focus reporting product to extract and display data from the college's student information system for managers and administrators.

This was Linegar's second presentation at the annual conference, an opportunity she was offered as a result of interacting with advanced users of the software in online forums.

Last year, Linegar, who has earned two degrees from Chadron State, said she approached her presentation doubting if the college’s web data displays were truly leading-edge but quickly realized that they were.

"It meant a lot to me to know that what we came up with in our campus focus group was a valuable example for others," she said.

Her topic this year, an extension of her 2013 presentation, addressed how to customize and make dashboards and other visualizations easy to use as tools to assist data-driven decision making.

“We use text, colors and icons to help decision makers see, at a glance, how things are performing," she said.

Between 30-40 people attended Linegar’s session including Information Builders president and CEO Gerald Cohen. Linegar was recently invited to lead a virtual Information Builders’ conference for about 100 developers in October.

The conference is especially valuable, according to Linegar, because it provides an opportunity for developers to meet, share coding, study user cases, work with new releases, experiment with new software versions in labs, offer feedback and talk to experts in a designated expert room.
