CHADRON -- A variety of performances are planned by the Chadron State College music department during the first part of November.

Arioso and Men’s Ensemble Choral Concert will lead off the full schedule of CSC music events Sunday, Nov. 2, in the Chadron Arts Center at 3 p.m. CSC vocal ensembles will sing pieces ranging from traditional folk songs from America, Europe, and Africa to imaginative and engaging modern music.

Included in the program is Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s intense and dramatic “Suite de Lorca.”

In commemoration of World War I, the Men’s Ensemble will sing a setting of John McCrae’s famous poem, "In Flanders Fields."

Next in the schedule, Brooks Hafey will perform a piano recital Friday, Nov.7, in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at 7:30 p.m. The event will also be available via csc.edu/live.

The theme of Hafey’s recital is “Looking Back.” The selections explore compositions inspired by the art and musical styles of the Baroque era. Debussy’s “Suite bergamasque,” which includes his famous “Clair de lune,” opens the program while Nikolai Kapustin’s jazz-infused “Suite in the Old Style” closes the program.

Sunday, Nov. 9, the CSC Concert Choir and Chadron Community Choir will join forces in a concert set for the Chadron Arts Center at 3 p.m.

The Concert Choir will perform pieces over a range of 400 years, including a Renaissance musical depiction of King David’s grief after the death of Absalom, and a stunning arrangement of the jazz standard, “Skylark.” The Community Choir presents a group of works on the theme of Americana, including a good old-fashioned hoedown.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Brass Quintet will meet with CSC students during the day Monday, Nov. 10, and perform an evening of classic and new brass quintet music for the college and community in the Student Center at 7:30 p.m.
