CSC cowgirls have mixed results at finals rodeo Wednesday night

CASPER, Wyo. - Two Chadron State College cowgirls had excellent times Wednesday night as the third go-round of the College National Finals Rodeo got underway in Casper, but two others struggled and will probably not be among the 12 finalists advancing to the championship round on Saturday night.

Senior Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff continued to excel in the goat tying. She wrapped up the legs of her goat Wednesday night in 6.5 seconds, allowing her to share second place in the performance. She also is second in the averages, just one tenth of second out of first place.

Winchell has ranked among the top six in each of the three go-rounds and her total time is 19.4 seconds. Only Hayden Segelke of Eastern New Mexico University at 19.3 seconds has a faster time after 23 of the 44 women in the goat tying have completed three runs.

But CSC’s Shaylee Hance of Circle, Mont., who entered Wednesday’s performance tied for fourth place after two go-rounds in 13.3 seconds, had problems on her third run and her mark of 8.5 seconds dropped her to 12th in the averages at 21.8 seconds.

In addition, senior Amy Tierney of Oral, S.D., completed her run in 7.6 seconds and is now 10th in the averages at 21.4 seconds. Tierney was 12 overall after two go-rounds had been completed.

Another CSC cowgirl from South Dakota, Amy Deichert of Spearfish, had the seventh fastest time of 14.17 seconds among the 25 barrel racers Wednesday night and is now second in the averages at 42.55 seconds. The only contestant with a faster cumulative time after three go-rounds is Callahan Crossley of Blue Mountain Community College at Pendleton, Ore., at 42.21 seconds.

Deichert’s time of 13.89 seconds in the second go-round is still the second fastest of the rodeo so far.

Another CSC barrel racer, Katie Loughran of Broken Bow, will make her third run tonight (Thursday). She was 29th through two go-rounds at 29.30 seconds.
