The Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers will host the first workday of the year Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

“This year’s activities are centered on restoration. We’ve got years of work ahead of us recovering from Storm Atlas” explained Lucinda Mays, CSC Public Horticulturist.

The Feb. 8 event will include a mini-lesson on seeds and tool care emphasizing the role each play in the restoration of residential landscapes on the high plains. Time will also be dedicated to sharing seed catalogs, seed swapping and packaging.

“We invite anyone interested in sharing their experience growing plants in the high plains, or those interested in learning more, to join us. Folks who have left over seeds from last year or seed catalogs are encouraged to bring some to share,” Mays said.

Volunteers will leave with a hand-packaged packet of flower seeds from campus gardens. Families with children are always welcome.

The Campus Arboretum Volunteers host learn and work days on campus about every six to eight weeks. The 2014 calendar will include tree pruning and planting for beginners and more experienced gardeners. Since soil building is a key component to successful plantings of any kind in the high plains, spring and fall sessions will address soil issues, flower and tree planting.

These events are held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon sharp and convene at the Sandoz Center on the CSC Campus. For more information, contact Lucinda Mays at 308-430-4186 or Jane Darnell at 308-430-2204.
