Chopin and Mozart to be included in April 17 piano duo concert

Chadron State College music faculty member Dr. James Margetts and accompanist Kimberly Murphy will present a duo piano concert at 7:30 p.m. April 17 in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

The program will include works by Chopin, Mozart, Milhaud and recent composer Richard Rodney Bennett. The concert is free and open to the public. The pair will play a restored 1919 Steinway and a restored 1969 Steinway.

Margetts is an associate professor of piano and teaches courses in applied and class piano, piano pedagogy and music theory. He holds degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University and the University of Cincinnati. Margetts is an active member of Music Teachers National Association and is a certified Musikgarten instructor.

He frequently collaborates with former CSC faculty member and trumpeter Adam Lambert. Margetts is a founding member of the Trans-Nebraska Players and the CSC Professors of Jazz. In addition to his college teaching, Margetts maintains a small independent piano studio in Chadron. He and his wife, Colleen, are the parents of four children. 

Kimberly Murphy is the CSC accompanist and music events director. She holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s of music in piano performance from the University of Missouri Kansas City conservatory of music. Murphy has performed internationally as a chamber musician and accompanist in countries including Canada and Austria.

She has accompanied both vocalists and instrumentalists at the UMKC conservatory, Avila College, Opera Kadopera, UMKC men’s chorus, conservatory orchestra and the Kansas City community symphony. As a soloist, she won first place in the Music Teachers National Association piano competition. She taught piano at a studio in Kansas City and lives in Chadron with her husband and two daughters.
