Chadron State women's rodeo team set for high finish prior to finals

After all three of the preliminary go-rounds have been completed, the CSC cowgirls are second in the team standing with 300 points. Only Central Arizona College at Coolidge with 347.5 has more points. Eastern New Mexico University at Portales is third with 255.

Two CSC contestants will be in the championship go-round tonight. Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff is second in the goat tying with a total time of 19.4 seconds on three runs and Amy Deichert of Spearfish is third in the barrel race with three runs totaling 42.55 seconds.

The finals will start at 7 o’clock in the Casper Events Center. The top 12 contestants in each of rodeo’s nine events will compete.

Winchell is just one-tenth of a second behind Hayden Segelke of Eastern New Mexico in goat tying and Deichert is .35 of second behind Taylor Engesser of Gillette College and .34 of a second behind Calli Crossley of Blue Mountain Community College in Oregon in the barrels.

Through the years, three CSC women’s teams have finished among the top eight in the final CNFR standings. The 1979 team made up of Jean Fuchs, Kathy Kennedy and Martee Meter was fourth, the 1983 team of Shari Fisher and Bunny Pisacka was fifth and last year’s team of Winchell and Amy Tierney tied for sixth and seventh.

The 2002 men’s team led by national champion bull rider Will Farrell wound up fourth for the highest finish by a group of CSC cowboys at the national rodeo.
