CHADRON – Several hundred cowboys and cowgirls from the 13 schools that make up the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be in Chadron this weekend to compete in the Chadron State College rodeo.

The action will be at the Dawes County Fairgrounds. The first go-round will require four sessions. The main performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday while slack is set for 1 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

The championship go-round will be at 10 a.m. Sunday. It will feature the 10 leaders in each event from the first go-round.

Cowboy church starting at 8 o’clock at the fairgrounds will precede the finals.

CSC rodeo coach Dustin Luper is hoping that his team will fare well at its home rodeo. He noted that the competition is rugged again this year in the region. He said a few of the Chadron State cowgirls who normally do well made small mistakes at the region’s first rodeo at Central Wyoming College in Riverton last week and none of them finished among the top six in their events.

The Chadron State women’s team missed winning the regional title by less than 12 points and then was the runner-up at the College National Finals Rodeo last year.

Four Chadron State cowboys were placewinners the Central Wyoming rodeo.

Spud Creek Rodeo Co. from Interior, S.D., will supply the rough stock for this year’s rodeo. The Gumb family from Burwell will furnish the stock for the timed events.

Sugar Ray Quinn of Lincoln will be the rodeo announcer. William Davey and Shilo Whitler will be the bullfighters.

Nearly 600 entries are expected for the rodeo, Luper said.
