Bolze will be first Graves Lecture Series speaker

Dr. Ron Bolze, Chadron State College associate professor in applied sciences, will kick off the fall 2014 Graves Lecture Series Tuesday, Sept. 23 with “Agriculture: Production or Conservation.”
He will present information about the current challenges facing the U.S. with the projected need to feed an additional two billion people in the world by 2050. He plans to focus on successes of the past through the Green Revolution with Norman Borlaug to today’s record yields and animal productivity, at the cost of degrading some of our natural resources including water and soil health.
Additional discussion will center on innovative farming practices that have the potential to increase yields, conserve water and rebuild soil health long term. Generational transitioning in an attempt to provide framing/ranching opportunities for the next generation may also find its way into the discussion.
Bolze, a Pennsylvania native, grew up on a small, diversified dairy farm. He earned his bachelor’s from Penn State University and his doctorate in Bovine Reproductive Physiology from Kansas State University.
His career has included time as a beef extension specialist with Ohio State University and Kansas State University, director of genetic testing for a certified Angus beef program, executive secretary for two national level beef breed associations and commercial marketing director for the nation’s largest Red Angus seed stock producer.
The lecture is free and open to the public at 7 p.m. in the CSC King Library. Bolze’s lecture will be streamed on CSC Live for viewers unable to attend, at www.csc.edu/live.
