A new tradition is starting at Chadron State College this spring. April 20 hundreds of CSC students, faculty, and staff will team up for “The Big Event.” This student-led community service project will focus on giving back to the community of Chadron for their continual support of CSC throughout the years, according to Shaunda French, assistant professor of communication at Chadron State.

The CSC volunteers will perform several different tasks including planting trees, visiting nursing homes, and a food drive, clearing brush and painting.

Wayne Anderson, Chadron city manager, submitted a request for the group to assist an independent 94-year-old man and his wife who have been married 74 years. Although active, they are no longer able to keep the 2.5 acres. The Big Event volunteers and two family members plan to clean up the downed tree branches and wood that have accumulated. Anderson said this will save an unnecessary expense as well as reduce the stress of large project.

The following athletic teams plan to participate: wrestling, football, volleyball, track, men's basketball, Social Work Club and Cheer.

Student organizations that have committed to helping with The Big Event are: Ag Club, Student Alumni Counsel, International Club, Health Professions Club, NAFME, Blue Key, Cardinal Key, NOCS, Revive, Public Relations Club, Social Science Club, Psychology Club, Legal Studies Club, Residence Life Association, ROTC, Omega Phi Rho, Allies Club and FCS Club.

CSC junior Samuel Parker, an intern for The Big Event explains, “We want to make a lasting impact in our community, and it all starts with being a part of something that is bigger than ourselves.”

The Big Event was founded at Texas A&M University in 1982. Since then it has spread to over 75 additional colleges nationwide. As noted in Texas A&M University’s mission statement, The Big Event is designed as a way to give back to the community. “Through service-oriented activities, The Big Event promotes campus and community unity as students come together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from the surrounding community.”
