Chadron State College senior Amy Tierney of Oral and Hot Springs, S.D., continued to excel in the goat tying Thursday night at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper.

Tierney completed her run in 6.4 seconds and is now tied for fourth in the third go-round. She also is third in the averages with a total time of 19.5 seconds on three runs.

Both of the cowgirls who are ahead of Tierney in the averages are also from the Central Rocky Mountain Region. Jordan Thurston-Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo., and a student at Gillette College has a total time of 18.7 seconds. Hayden Segelke of Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., is close behind with a cumulative time of 19.1 seconds.

Thurston-Miller and Segelke had times of 6.2 seconds Thursday night to share the lead in the go-round.

Tierney is alone in third place with her 19.5-second total, but another cowgirl from the region, Shaylee Hance of Central Wyoming College at Riverton, is one of three contestants who share fourth place in the averages with 20.1 seconds.

Chadron State’s other entry in the goat tying at the finals rodeo, Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff, will make her third run tonight when the third go-round concludes. Winchell completed her first two runs in 12.9 seconds, tying with Segelke for third place at the end of the second go-round.

The top 12 contestants in each of the rodeo’s nine events will advance to the championship round Saturday night.

Hance won the region’s championship this spring with 982.5 points, followed by Thurston-Miller with 855, Winchell with 680 and Segelke with 522.5. Tierney was 10th in the goat tying averages in the region, but got to compete at the national rodeo because she was elected the student representative on the board of directors a year ago. Her term is for two years.
