CSC receives public health grant
Chadron State College’s health professions department has received a $6,250 grant for faculty-led, undergraduate research into public health. Jill Mack, director of Health Professions Programs, including the Rural Health Opportunities Program and Public Health Early Admission Student Track at CSC said she is excited about the funding from the Rural Futures Institute.
Mack will serve as the Site Coordinator for the two-year grant. Dr. Patrik Johansson, executive director of the Rural Health Education Network authored the grant and will serve as the principal investigator for the project which involves four colleges in Nebraska.
CSC Associate Professor in the Physical and Life Sciences department, Ann Buchmann, will be the faculty lead for the project which will focus on service to the community. Kim Engel, director of Panhandle Public Health will represent her agency as the local partner in the research.
Mack said three possible research projects are being considered and by late spring or early summer the selection of the final project will be made and research will begin.
Students involved in the project will be required to write reflection papers that link the service experience with the learning. Buchmann will determine responsibilities for the students involved including literature reviews, survey development, interviews of subject, data analysis and manuscript preparation. The grant funds may be used toward student stipends and research materials.
