Chadron State College student Mallory Irvine served as an Iditarod dog handler in 2012. The 2013 CSC Study Away Alaska group is working at the race this week. They also plan to visit cultural centers, art museums, and agricultural, sealife and other scientific centers.

“Meet and greet with a musher” isn’t a normal item on a course syllabus, but this week is anything but normal for a group of 14 Chadron State College students. They arrived in Alaska February 28 with faculty members Chuck Butterfield, Ann Petersen and Karen Enos and will return to the Lower 48 on March 10.

The students’ itinerary for the week includes dog-handling training prior to the Iditarod, assisting mushers prior to the race, visiting Anchorage museums, cultural and agricultural centers, the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, Alaska SeaLife Center, several local schools and the Native People Corporations.

Butterfield led his first group to Alaska several years ago, and then was able to return in 2012 with several faculty, an Admissions Representative and 19 students.

Facebook pages are posted for both the CSC Study Away-Alaska 2012 and 2013 groups. Laura Phagan, Admissions Representative, is on the 2013 trip recording images for use in recruiting.
