Chadron area residents who enjoy striking up a tune are being invited to join one of Chadron State College’s two community music groups this month.

Rehearsals will begin for the Chadron Community Chorus on Thursday, Jan. 17, and the Chadron Community Band on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Rehearsals for both groups will be 7-9 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The chorus, under the direction of Dr. Una Taylor, will sing “beautiful settings” of two pieces – Robert Burns’ poem “The Banks of O’ Doon” and “The Prayer of Saint Francis.” Other selections include a stirring spiritual called “Heaven,” which features the bass section of the choir, and a moving piece called “Here’s to Song.” She said the program also will feature a pair of “fun” pieces -- the 16th century madrigal “Matona, Mia Cara” and “Dance a Cachuca, Fandango, Bolero,” a rousing chorus from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers.”

The band will again be under the direction of Dr. Sidney Shuler and his wife, Pamela. Featured selections include Gustav Holst’s classic “First Suite in Eb” and Eric Whitacre’s “Ghost Train.”

Pamela Shuler is encouraging any community member who might like to get back into playing an instrument to join the group, “no matter how long it’s been.”

The chorus will rehearse 11 times on Thursdays in the choir room of Memorial Hall before its concert Sunday, April 7. Band rehearsals will be each Tuesday in the Memorial Hall band room.

Registration materials will be available at the first rehearsal. The cost is $20 for the semester.

More information may be obtained by contacting Pamela Shuler at pshuler@csc.edu or Taylor at utaylor@csc.edu.
