53rd CSC Scholastic Contest another success

The 53rd annual Chadron State College Scholastic Contest hosted 49 high schools from three states and a total of 1,154 students who took over 40 different tests today. Activities provided for the students while they were not in tests included the human genome trivia scavenger hunt, poetry and prose readings, country swing dancing and a CSC football practice. The Eagle Cook-Off in a large food preparation lab in the Burkhiser building was attended by over 50 people.

Stevens High School, Rapid City, S.D., ranked first in Division I. Sidney High School, Sidney, Neb. finished first in Division II. St. Thomas More High School of Rapid City, S.D. came in first in Division III. The Division IV winner was Rapid City Christian High School and Banner County High School won Division V.

Contest results were displayed on large screens in the CSC Student Center throughout the morning as tests were completed and can be seen online at: www.csc.edu/scholastic/results/index.php. Photos can be seen on the CSC Facebook page and in the Chadron State News Gallery on Smugmug.

Each senior who won first place in a contest receives a Scholastic Achievement Award. This award is a waiver of the in-state portion of tuition to CSC for the fall and spring semesters of the 2013-2014 school year.

Medals will be awarded to the top three places in each test. Certificates of Merit will be awarded to those finishing in the top 25 percent of each test, and a plaque will be presented to the top school of each of the five divisions. All awards are mailed to the winners the week following the contest.

In 2010, former Chadron Mayor Donny Grantham, proclaimed Scholastic Day in honor of the 50th annual event.

Members of the committee that planned and coordinated the event are co-chairs Dr. Jim Wright and Dr. Beth Wentworth, Dr. Jo Forstrom, Shellie Johns, Kathy Mason, Justin Haag, Aaron Prestwich, Andrew Schmid and Laure Sinn.
