Woodhead, Sheehy speaking at NSCS scholarship luncheon
New England Patriots running back and Chadron State College graduate Danny Woodhead is scheduled to deliver the alumni address at the Nebraska State College System’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at noon Friday, April 13, at the Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln. Woodhead will join Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy who will deliver the keynote address.
Sheehy is serving his second term as lieutenant governor. A native of Hastings, he served on the city council and two terms as mayor. Sheehy has been involved in economic development efforts across Nebraska. He also serves as Nebraska’s chairman of homeland security and presides over the Nebraska Legislature when it is in session.
Woodhead graduated magna cum laude from CSC in 2009 where he was only the third football player in history to twice be awarded the Harlon Hill Trophy, an award given to recognize the most valuable player in NCAA Division II football. He signed with the Patriots in September 2010 after playing for the New York Jets.
More than 100 high school seniors from across Nebraska have been awarded full tuition NSCS Board of Trustees Scholarships worth over $15,000 during four years. Three high school students, one each at Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State Colleges, have been awarded Governor’s Opportunity Award Scholarships which cover half tuition and are renewable for four years.
“The luncheon is our way of congratulating these outstanding students and their families on their academic success and welcoming them as students at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges," said NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter. "We are honored to have two outstanding Nebraskans, Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy and Danny Woodhead, join in celebrating the accomplishments of young Nebraskans.”
Full-tuition Board of Trustees Scholarships are awarded annually to Nebraska residents who have earned a score of 25 or higher on the ACT or 1,700 on the SAT college entrance exam. Three Governor’s Opportunity Awards are awarded annually to students who have earned an ACT score between 21 and 24 or a score ranging from 1500 to 1650 on the SAT exam. Students must also submit an essay detailing their plans to stay in Nebraska after graduating from college, how they plan to become a community leader and how they intend to contribute to the state’s economy.
