Social work class hosting disabilities conference

The Chadron State College Professional Social Work Class 435 will host a disabilities conference Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Student Center ballroom from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The conference, “Dis-Abilities No More, Together We Will Explore,” focuses on education, opportunities and resources and seeks to raise community awareness. Admission is free and open to the public and includes a complimentary lunch.

The conference is intended to raise awareness and dispel myths associated with disabilities. There will be information booths, break-out sessions and demonstrations of the latest adaptive devices for a variety of diagnoses. Also featured will be information about laws and policies designed to prevent discrimination against those that face disabilities and a variety of guest speakers.

The keynote speaker of the conference is Gary E. May, an associate professor of social work in the graduate program at the University of Southern Indiana. May’s background includes research and teaching in the areas of social welfare policy, disability issues, veteran’s affairs and post-traumatic stress disorders. He has co-edited the text “Ending Disability Discrimination: Strategies for Social Workers” which was published in 2005.

Each year, the senior social work class must host a one day conference on an important social issue. The class must raise money for their conference through a variety of fundraisers and generous contributions from sponsors. Past conferences from the professional social work classes have covered civility, veteran’s issues and cancer awareness. These conferences give students the opportunity to contribute to the community and further their education by developing skills for their careers.
