Lecture series opening with tribute to Graves, Wolf

Published:

The Graves Lecture Series at Chadron State College will open this fall by paying tribute to the two scholars who were most instrumental in its creation.

The tribute to the late Dr. Dorset Graves and Milton Wolf will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center at 7 p.m. It is open to the public free of charge.

Graves, the series’ namesake, and Wolf, director of the Reta King Library, died within three days of each other. Wolf, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 30, and Graves, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 1.

Besides teaching, Graves was chairman of the CSC Division of Language and Literature for 29 years. After he had ended his 32-year career on the faculty in 1990, he continued to serve as an adjunct, or part-time faculty member, for 15 more years.

Wolf began his duties at CSC in August 2005. He led many efforts to modernize the library and make it more attractive to visitors.

In preparation of the presentation, Shawn Hartman, the library’s assistant director of public services, and Dr. Matt Evertson, chairman of the CSC Department of English and Humanities, are asking people to contact them with any short stories or anecdotes about Graves and Wolf that they would like to share at the event. Written accounts would also be appreciated from those unable to attend or who prefer not to speak. These will then be presented at the lecture. They can be reached by email at shartman@csc.edu and mevertson@csc.edu.

The remainder of the Graves Lecture Series this fall consists of presentation by CSC faculty members. The series will be completed in four consecutive weeks.

The other presentations, which will be at 7 p.m. in room 108 of the Reta King Library, are “Arts Advocacy” by Dr. Sandy Schaefer on Sept. 18, “How Learning Works – Seven Research Based Principles of Learning” by Dr. Mary Jo Carnot on Sept. 25, and “The Food Experiment: Us” by Dr. Norma Nealeigh on Oct. 2.

The presentations may be viewed at www.ustream.tv/channel/graves-lecture-series live.
