The new Miss Nebraska is Chadron State College senior Mariah Cook. She was crowned Saturday night in North Platte, and will represent the state at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas in January.

Cook was the CSC homecoming queen in the fall of 2009 and is a former cheerleader at the college. She won the interview portion of the Miss Nebraska Pageant as well as the preliminary talent contest for her original piano solo.  Her platform is “The Power of Adoption.”

Just prior to participating in the pageant, Cook had been living in a tent while working at the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Site northwest of Crawford.

The new Miss Nebraska is a graduate of Parker High School in Colorado. Her parents, Allen and Leanne Cook, now live in Virginia, and her grandmother, Carmen Cook, lives on the family homestead about 30 miles southwest of Chadron.

Cook is the second Chadron State coed to be crowned Miss Nebraska.  The first was Sharon Pelc in 1974. She is now the director of student life at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
