Arboretum volunteers talking tools

Chadron State College Arboretum volunteers will host a “Simple Tricks of the Tool Trade” event on Saturday, April 28.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at CSC and work until noon.

“Bring your garden spade and learn hands-on how to sharpen it into a soil-slicing blade. Then join in the spring planting on campus,” said Lucinda Mays, Chadron State public horticulturist.

Volunteers will learn tips for care of common garden tools that help extend tool life.  Well-sharpened tools improve the quality of soil preparation and planting, and make gardening tasks much easier.

Campus Arboretum Volunteer workdays are scheduled regularly at the CSC campus throughout the growing season. Participants learn horticulture lessons that apply to their gardens at home, while helping grow the CSC campus landscape.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear gloves and a hat and bring tools and a water bottle.
