Workshop attendees to build wind turbines

Published:

A six-day workshop at Chadron State College will give participants hands-on experience in building wind turbines. The workshop will be Monday through Saturday, March 7-12, at the Burkhiser Complex.

Participants will start with raw materials – steel, copper, magnets, lumber, resins and wire -- and construct at least one 12-foot diameter 1.5 kilowatt wind turbine from scratch, including its low RPM three-phase alternator. The constructed turbines will be available for purchase after the workshop.

Kevin Miller, the CSC faculty member who is helping organize the workshop, said attendees will learn the skills needed to critically evaluate any location, tower or wind turbine – knowledge that will be applied in many trades and industries.

Course instructors are affiliated with Buckville Energy Consulting and OtherPower.com of Fort Collins, Colo. The event is co-sponsored by CSC and WindFarmer Power & Light of Chadron.

Registration is due Thursday, March 3, and the course is limited to 18 people. The workshop costs $600 per person, with a discount for second members of a household who register. Continuing education credits from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council and the Institute for Sustainable Power Quality are available for students who successfully complete the course.
