Wind Symphony, Community Band set fall concert

The Chadron State College music department is preparing for its combined concert featuring the Wind Symphony, CSC’s top concert band, and the Chadron Community Symphonic Band, which consists of both students and community members.

The concert will be Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the CSC Student Center. Admission is free.

Both groups will be under the direction of Dr. Adam Lambert, CSC director of bands. The Wind Symphony is an auditioned group primarily made up of music majors or students who enroll at CSC with significant performance experience. The Symphonic Band is a diverse group, ranging from former music educators and more musically experienced students to students and community members who perform on a more recreational basis.

Lambert said both groups are performing outstanding material for the concert.

The concert will include a few selections from the Oct. 1 Alumni Band concert, a highlight of CSC’s homecoming celebration. The selections include “Washington Post” and “National Emblem.”

The Wind Symphony will perform what Lambert calls “very excited” music that has pushed the limits of the group. The selections include “Sound the Bells,” by John Williams, “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre, “Commando March” by Samuel Barber, and “Sonoran Desert Holiday,” by Ron Nelson. CSC faculty member Dr. Jim Margetts will join the group on piano for one of the selections.

Among other selections, the symphonic band will perform “The Empire Strikes Back,” with what Lambert calls “a little surprise twist.”

Lambert said the concert is just one event of a big year for the Wind Symphony, which will tour to Minneapolis, Minn., in the spring. The tour will include a clinic with world-renowned composer Timothy Mahr from St. Olaf College in Minneapolis. The group plans to perform one of his pieces and receive feedback directly from the composer.
