Volunteers to learn fall planting skills

Published:

Chadron State College Arboretum volunteers will be fall-planting bulbs and shrubs on campus Saturday, Oct. 22, to prepare the campus for spring. Volunteers are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and work until noon.

The event is designed to help people learn how to prepare and plant bulb beds for maximum visual impact in the spring.

“Selecting bulbs and giving them a good examination to determine good health is an important place to start. Preparing the soil and bed depth is equally important,” said Lucinda Mays, CSC horticulturist.

Mays will provide volunteers with a brief classroom session followed by a planting demonstration and hands-on work session in the campus gardens. Lessons learned during the work day will translate to home landscape.

“We encourage volunteers of all ages at all of our events. It’s especially exciting to share the campus activities during our 100th year with real hands-on projects that add to the legacy of Chadron State,” Mays said. “It’s fun to see the bright spring blooms at graduation time and remember that we planted them in the fall. Volunteers are welcome for all or part of the day, and we commit to end promptly at noon.”

Volunteers are asked to bring what they have of hand trowels, rakes and garden spades. They are reminded to dress for the weather, wear gloves and hats, and bring their drinking water. Snacks will be provided. For more information contact Mays at 308-430-4186.
