Chadron State College Upward Bound kicked off its summer program Monday, May 31, at Memorial Park with a picnic attended by 120 Upward Bound students, parents, staff and teachers.

The 35 Upward Bound students will be staying at CSC for a month while taking courses that count toward their high school and college education. The students also will participate in other activities during their stay. The summer program will end with a trip to Yellowstone National Park.

Upward Bound is a program that started in 2006 at CSC under the direction of Dr. Randy Rhine, CSC vice president for enrollment management and student services and program director Dr. Maggie Smith-Bruehlman.

Upward Bound encourages students to reach their educational goals and prepares them for college. Students are able to participate in Upward Bound after completing the eighth grade and reaching age 13. Other criteria include income eligibility and family education history. The program targets students whose parents do not have a college degree.

Smith-Bruehlman said the benefits of being a part of Upward Bound include exposure to new experiences, encouragement in personal growth and development and leadership skills. Participants also receive stipends during the academic year and for the summer program.
