The top schools in three of the five divisions in Chadron State College’s 51st Scholastic Contest on Friday had a familiar ring to them.

Rapid City Stevens claimed its fourth win in a row in Division I, joining Alliance in Division II and Crawford in Division IV as repeat champions. Another Rapid City school, St. Thomas More, earned the top spot in Division III for the first time since 2006, while Rock County of Bassett earned its first championship ever for besting the competition in Division V.

A total of 1,457 students took tests, the most entrants since 2005.

Stevens, a perennial title holder which has claimed the first-place plaque in seven of the past eight contests, soared with 18 medal winners. Stevens, along with Alliance and Gering, finished with five golds. Alliance and Chadron tied for second in the medal count with 11 each.

The seniors who won gold qualify for CSC’s Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year.

One contestant, Sierra Walker of Gering, won two gold medals, one each in general anatomy and physiology and information literacy.

Another, Emily Reeves of Rapid City Central, was a triple medal winner, claiming gold in American government and bronzes in literature and American history. During the 2010 contest, Reeves earned golds in music and English usage.

Eight other students won two medals in various tests. They are Jett Jurgens of Alliance, Connor Kilmurray of Sidney, Geoffrey Ledbetter of Chadron, Bailey Paugh of Stevens, Matt Powell of Mitchell, Nolan Rager of Gordon-Rushville, Lander Solon of Rapid City Central and Emily Sybrant of Rock County.

The CSC scholastic contest, which began in 1961, is believed to be the oldest and largest of its kind in the High Plains region.

Following are the final school standings and medal winners. More detailed results and other information about the contest may be found at www.csc.edu/scholastic.
