Chadron third-graders this week learned about the importance of exercise, nutrition and hygiene during a program at Chadron State College sponsored by the Panhandle Public Health District.

Students of the CSC Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department, led the 62 third-graders through activities for the annual Dance for the Health of It at the Nelson Physical Activity Center on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The children stayed busy from early morning to early afternoon.

Janelle Hansen, PPHD health educator, said a grant from the Nebraska Beef Council and the University of Nebraska at Kearney allows PPHD to sponsor the Chadron event and similar “Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day” events throughout the Panhandle. Hansen said the event is accomplishing its mission of stressing the importance of a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

Students from three CSC classes led a series of stations of physical activity for the children. The classes, taught by Donna Ritzen and Dawn Brammer, are physical education and health methods, individual and dual sports, and elementary rhythmics.

Brammer said the annual event gives the college students, many who are aspiring to be teachers, experience in keeping children engaged during long periods of activity.
