The Chadron State College theatre program is preparing for its upcoming production of “How I Learned to Drive,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning play which debuted off-Broadway in 1997.

The play will be Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 10-12, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m.

“How I Learned to Drive,” written by Paula Vogel, received the 1998 Pulitzer for Drama. The production is intended for only mature audiences, as it employs metaphors of driving and issues of pedophilia, incest and misogyny. The plot centers on one girl’s family experiences as it explores ideas of control and manipulation.

The play is being directed by CSC senior Amanda Pintore of Omaha, and features a cast of five students. They are Becci French of Alliance, Mason Quinn of Cheyenne, Wyo., Ashley Daniels of Sheridan, Wyo., HeatherAnn Hicks of Valentine and James Safarik of Hyannis.

A number of other students have prominent roles in the production.

Junior Ryan Helton of Grand Island is designing lighting and senior Shannon Smay of Sidney is charged with sound design. The costumes and hair are designed by senior Angela Stransky of Scottsbluff. Stage managers are seniors Shalee Jones of Crawford and Angela Heesacker of Hay Springs.

"Behind the Scenes," a video segment featuring students discussing the play, is available on the theatre program's website.
