Summer, fall bloom is goal for arboretum volunteers

Published:

Chadron State College Arboretum volunteers will plant flowers Saturday, May 21, to prepare the campus for new and returning students this coming fall. Volunteers are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on campus and work until noon.

This event is designed to help volunteers learn how to recognize characteristics of well-grown annuals and perennials, and how best to plant and care for those plants in the Chadron area. Volunteers will learn the lessons “hands-on” while planting, improving soils with compost, cutting back winter-killed stems and adding water-saving mulch.

“We encourage volunteers of all ages at all of our events, but this is an especially fun day for families because you can see the results of your labor throughout the summer and take what you learn home to your own gardens, said CSC public horticulturist Lucinda Mays, who leads the group. “Volunteers are welcome for all or part of the day, and we always end promptly at noon.”

Volunteers are asked to bring what they have of hand trowels, rakes and garden spades. People are reminded bring drinking water and to dress for the weather with gloves and a hat. Snacks will be provided. For more information contact Mays at 308-430-4186.
