Special C Hill lighting ceremony set
The annual lighting of the C on C Hill has long been a Chadron State College homecoming tradition, and this year’s event is expected to be especially momentous. CSC plans to flip the switch for its new permanent electrical lighting of the Chadron landmark Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The public is invited to attend the event, which is coordinated by the Cardinal Key Honor Society. Students are being encouraged to gather near the Lindeken Clocktower at 6:30 p.m. From there, they will walk to the west side of Old Admin, where the C will be visible. The public is welcome to join the activity at either location.
In an effort to coincide with CSC’s centennial, college personnel have been working this fall to realize the longtime goal of lighting of the concrete C south of campus.
The C was constructed in 1924, an effort led by college mathematics instructor T.A.F. Williams. The first recorded lighting of C Hill was in the late 1920s or early 1930s, when the C Club sponsored the Lantern Walk. The event reoccurred for many years, according to the late Ross Armstrong, a longtime coach and administrator of the institution. The Lantern Walk ended sometime around World War II. Since the lighting of C began in 1983, flashlights, glow sticks and other methods have been used to light the letter.
From the time of the C’s construction, many students have followed tradition by trekking up the hill to give it new coats of white paint. CSC’s Project Strive group has painted the C in recent years, and plans to give it a new coat Thursday, Sept. 22. Project Strive also plans to plant trees in the ongoing effort to replenish the forested hillside that was devastated during the wildfires of 2006.
The lighting of the C is one of many homecoming activities scheduled for next week. To view more activities, visit the calendar at www.csc.edu/centennial.
