Professor's new book examines film director's work
Dr. Thomas Deane Tucker, professor of English and Humanities at Chadron State College has recently published a book. The book, “Terrence Malick: Film and Philosophy,” was a collaboration with co-editor Dr. Stuart Kendall, chairman of Critical Studies at the California College of Arts. The book was published May 12.
“Terrence Malick: Film and Philosophy” is an edited collection of essays on the films by Terrence Malick. Malick is a film director who studied philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.
“Each of the essays in the book is grounded in film studies, philosophical inquiry, and the emerging field of scholarship that combines the two disciplines,” Tucker said.
The book features various film-philosophers from around the globe on the philosophy about Malick’s films. Authors in the book include Dr. Matthew Evertson, associate professor and chairman of the English and Humanities Department at CSC, Tucker, and writers from Australia, Taiwan and Italy.
“My favorite aspect of the book is the sheer variety of philosophical approaches to Malick represented in the book,” said Tucker.
Ten days after the book was published Malick’s film “The Tree of Life” won the top prize at the Cannes films festival, the Palm d’Or, on May 22.
The book is published by Continuum Publishing, the largest independent academic press in the world. Two years after the contract was offered, the book was ready to be published. Continuum publishing did an initial print run in hardback for the college and university library market. Within the next year the paperback version are expected to be available.
“The process went remarkably smooth,” Tucker said.
