Post Playhouse 'striking up the band' Saturday
A special concert Saturday, May 28, will kick off a season of five musicals for The Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson State Park.
The Bald Mountain Rounders, consisting of Chadron musicians Robin Smith, Jack Honerkamp, Norm Martin and Jolana Milburn, will bring their special brand of bluegrass music to the stage for a performance at 8 p.m.
Tom Ossowski, Post Playhouse artistic director, said Saturday’s concert will be the first of many fun-filled and quality performances at the theatre west of Crawford this year. He said the professional theatre has again attracted highly talented actors and actresses from across the nation.
The productions of this year’s repertory slate of performances begin Friday, June 10. The first show provides a dramatic look at a singer who has been regarded as one of the most important country music artists of all time. “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” will feature the music of Williams, who had 35 top 10 hits in a six-year span ending in 1953, the year he died.
“Lost Highway” and three of the other five musicals will take the stage at least a dozen times this summer. “Forever Plaid” opens June 24; followed by “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” June 28; and “The Putnam County Spelling Bee,” July 8. Four performances have been set late in the season for the fifth musical on the schedule, “Broadway: A Cabaret,” which features music made popular by the world-famous professional theatres of Manhattan.
Typical show times are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with many 2 p.m. matinees scheduled for weekends and Wednesdays late in the season. The season ends Aug. 14.
This marks the 44th season of the Post Playhouse, which is sponsored this year by the Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Chadron State College, H&R Block of Chadron, the First National Bank of Chadron and Chadron radio KCSR-KBPY.
Because the performances often sell out, Ossowski recommends purchasing seating in advance. Tickets, along with the complete schedule, may be obtained at the Post Playhouse’s website, www.postplayhouse.com. Tickets also may be purchased by calling the playhouse box office at 308-665-1976 after Tuesday, May 24.
