Outlook brightening for C Hill lighting
Those who have seen lights glowing on Chadron’s C Hill in recent weeks have likely not been hallucinating.
Chadron State College employees have been working to realize a longtime goal of the community -- to provide permanent lighting of the concrete C south of campus.
Dale Grant, CSC vice president for administration, said college electricians and maintenance workers have been experimenting with lighting configurations for the community landmark. He said the project faces several hurdles, such as getting electricity to the site and finding fixtures that will hold up to climate and foot traffic.
Grant said the C is a unique landmark for Nebraska, and deserves to be seen both day and night. The only other known hillside letter in the state is the M overlooking McCook.
The C was constructed in 1924, an effort led by college mathematics instructor T.A.F. Williams. Since the letter’s construction, many students have followed tradition by trekking up the hill to give it new coats of white paint. In addition, the lighting of C Hill is a homecoming tradition administered by the Cardinal Key Honor Society.
College officials hope the lighting project can be finished this fall to join other improvements as a reminder of CSC’s centennial year. Other projects in progress include the new flag plaza on the Dean’s Green, an outdoor sculpture titled “The Muses” between Sparks Hall and Old Admin, and the entrance portal at the corner of 10th and Main streets.
