Chadron State College’s outstanding graduating seniors were in the spotlight Friday during the institution’s annual Ivy Day ceremony in Memorial Hall, and a trio of health sciences students shined.

Jacob Zitterkopf of Scottsbluff, who has majors in human biology and business, claimed two of the night’s biggest honors. The aspiring dentist was presented the Platinum Eagle award and was crowned the Ivy Day king. The other Platinum Eagle award winner is pre-medicine student Ashley Maxon of Laurel and the Ivy Day queen is nursing student Elizabeth Ridder of Callaway. Zitterkopf and Maxon will continue their studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as part of the Rural Health Opportunities program this fall, while Ridder has been accepted to Creighton University. Ridder’s sister, Erin, won the Ivy Day queen honor in 2009.

The Platinum Eagle is presented annually to one male and one female for “distinguished leadership and service.” A faculty committee makes the selection. The Platinum Eagles are considered the highest honors a Chadron State student can receive. The Ivy Day king and queen are selected by a vote of the student body from nominated members of Blue Key and Cardinal Key – the honor societies that sponsor the annual event.

Ivy Day featured speeches from Dr. Jay Sutliffe, CSC assistant professor of family and consumer sciences, and the Blue Key and Cardinal Key orators, Jordan Haas of Hemingford and Jennifer Weiss of Ainsworth.

The event featured the presentation of many other awards.

A total of 41 graduates of Saturday’s spring commencement ceremony and the December 2010 ceremony were selected by department faculty as the best in their programs of study. Students who are graduating with honors – summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude – also were recognized.

Ivy Day, which evolved from a May Day ceremony, has been a CSC tradition since 1920.
