Exhibit features landscaping drawings

The artwork of Chadron State College horticulturist Lucinda Mays will be on display at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Jan. 24-March 23. The exhibit is titled "The Layers of Landscape."
The exhibit will feature Mays’s technique of creating layered conceptual drawings for landscape installations. The exhibit will focus on the CSC campus. Center director Sarah Polak first saw Mays’ drawings about five years ago.
“What Lucinda saw as working documents, I saw as works of art.” said Polak, noting that people were on tours of the Center have been taken with artistry as well as the technique in creating the drawings.
Mays said she came up with the idea for drawing early in her design career.
“It is sometimes difficult for people to visualize what a planting will look like in 20 years, these drawings help them do that,” she said.
Mays hopes those interested in the CSC campus will come to the exhibit. Mays and Polak have also designed an area in the exhibit for people to give their input into upcoming CSC projects.
This is the first in a series of exhibitions by the Sandoz Center to focus on CSC, in celebration of the College’s centennial.
The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is open to the public from 8-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 9-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.
