CSC remembers 9/11
More than 250 people gathered on Chadron State College’s Dean’s Green on Monday to pay tribute to the lives lost on 9/11 and the war on terror.
The featured speaker was 1st Lt. Franklin Annis of Chadron. During his seven-minute presentation, Annis paid tribute to a wide variety of American sacrifices since terrorists attacked the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon in 2001.
Annis recognized current and past members of the military and their families in attendance, and paid tribute to the 6,207 members of the military who have died since the attacks. He also spoke about American values and the military’s efforts to preserve freedom and end tyranny, and challenged teachers, parents and others to tell the story of 9/11 to future generations.
Following the speech, the names of all 59 Nebraskans who have been killed in the war on terror were announced. Other features of the ceremony were the raising of the American flag by CSC ROTC cadets and the placing of a poppy wreath by Connie Frandson and Lou Marshall of the American Legion Auxiliary.
The event was the first public ceremony at the new flag plaza on the Dean's Green, a feature that was constructed this year to help celebrate the college's centennial.
CSC also commemorated the anniversary of 9/11 with a moment of silence prior to Saturday’s football game at Elliott Field, where Coach Bill O’Boyle and his staff had specially painted a patriotic artwork at centerfield.
