Chadron State College graduate Jovan Mays of Aurora, Colo., and three other team members won the national slam poetry title in Boston on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Mays, who graduated from CSC in December 2010, is a member of Slam Nuba, the Denver team that claimed top honors during the National Poetry Slam at the Berklee Performance Center. The annual event, which is the largest gathering of poets in North America, is in its 22nd year. Mays refers to it as the "Super Bowl" of the genre, attracting more than 300 poets and an audience of 2,500.

The four teams in the finals presented four three-minute rounds, each judged on a scale of 0-10 by randomly selected audience members. Many of the performances focused on social commentary. Slam Nuba's topics included chain gains and the revolution in South Africa.

While at CSC, Mays often entertained audiences with poetry and song, and organized a popular annual talent show titled Release.
