Community Chorus singing back to 1911

The Community Chorus at Chadron State College is inviting singers to join the group as it prepares a period concert to recognize the institution’s centennial.

Rehearsals will be Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning Jan. 20, culminating with the concert Sunday, April 3.

Dr. Una Taylor, the faculty member who directs the group, said the concert will feature American popular music from the 1910s, the decade in which CSC was founded.

“I’d like to commemorate this important milestone by gathering as many past, present, and potential community choir singers as possible for a memorable concert in April 2011,” Taylor said. “I’m putting together a concert program of American music that includes well-known songs that were composed or published in 1911, and perhaps the rest of the decade, when Chadron State College was founded.”

Taylor lists more than a dozen possible songs for the concert, including “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” “Over There,” “Danny Boy,” “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” “Just Me and My Gal,” “God Bless America,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Honeysuckle Rag” and “Ragtime Cowboy Joe.”

“I’m excited about selecting the program,” she said. “What an absolutely fantastic experience it would be to have everyone who has ever sung with the community choir from time to time, as well as new members, singing together in a big choir to make a really great showing for the commemorative concert.”
