Civility Improvement Workshop is Friday
Chadron State College social work students are making final preparations for a free workshop about civility set for this week.
Friday's Civility Improvement Workshop will be sponsored by the social work methods class, communities and organizations, taught by Bruce Hoem. The event is open to social workers, teachers, law enforcement officers, counselors and any interested community members.
Hoem said the workshop will focus on how and why civility is important, as well as offer strategies to nurture and support civility in young people.
Each fall, the class sponsors an event designed to enhance community knowledge, understanding, and awareness of a special issue. In the past few years, the class has presented a conference to raise awareness of veterans issues and honor veterans; a program to raise awareness of services available in the Nebraska Panhandle for people affected by cancer and give an opportunity for them to tell their stories; and a public event to share videotaped life stories of nursing home residents. Each year the class decides on a different project, which must be designed as a learning experience that is open to the community.
The Civility Improvement Workshop will be offered in two sessions. The morning session will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will be repeated in the afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration will take place for the early session from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., and for the afternoon session from noon to 12:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served to workshop participants. There will be no charge for the workshop, and continuing education credits may be offered to certain professions.
