Campus gearing up for fall semester

Published:

Chadron State College’s fall semester gets under way this week with orientation for new students. Classes begin Monday.

Deena Kennell, one of the orientation’s organizers, said the event will help students clear up any unfinished business and be prepared when classes begin. She said it also provides a great opportunity for the students to meet faculty and classmates.

The orientation, which is mandatory for first-year and transfer students, begins Thursday when students will begin moving in to the residence halls at 8 a.m. The students will be able to get computer network assistance that afternoon before a welcome by President Janie Park, the class photo and a picnic.

Friday will feature a variety of informational sessions for the students and their parents to get students off on the right foot. Included with be panel discussions and departmental presentations.

Saturday will be more focused toward fun events, such as the CSC Eagles’ football and volleyball scrimmages and an open gym. The Student Center and Residence Life Association also are planning events to entertain the students each evening.

The Office of Student Activities and Campus Activities Board has distributed “Week of Welcome” posters promoting about 30 events between Aug. 18 and Sept. 1. The activities include parties, dances, open mics, cosmic bowling and a hypnotist. One of the events is the annual Uptown on Campus on 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, in which representatives from area businesses and organizations are given the opportunity to meet students and show off their services. It will be in the Student Center.

Students returning to CSC will notice some changes when they arrive on campus. A number of campus renovation and construction projects have been completed and others are nearly finished.

Also, the upcoming week will be the first big test for the new reconfiguration of CSC’s student services. Designed to be more of a “one-stop shopping” experience, students will now be directed to the new Student Transition and Registration Team, or START, office on the first floor of Crites Hall for the majority of their student services needs.

The new parking lot between Brooks Hall and Kent Hall, in the area of the Kline Center demolition, will not be complete before classes convene, so students moving into Brooks will be allowed to park in designated areas along 10th Street while moving in.

Construction crews began pouring concrete pavement on the western side of the lot Monday. Dale Grant, CSC vice president for administration, said the concrete will require five days of curing and painting before opened for use and expects it to be ready for some vehicles early next week.
