Broadcast journalist to speak at commencement
Retired broadcast journalist Larry Miller, a Chadron native and Chadron State College alumnus, will deliver the commencement address for his alma mater’s undergraduate ceremony Saturday, May 7.
CSC’s ceremony for the 235 candidates for bachelor’s degrees will begin at 10 a.m. at Armstrong Gym. Diplomas for 69 master's degree candidates are scheduled to be awarded at 8 a.m. in Memorial Hall. Dr. Norma Nealeigh, CSC family and consumer sciences professor, will speak at the earlier ceremony.
Miller, who lives in Spearfish, S.D., with his wife Karen, earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from CSC in 1969 and a Master of Science in journalism from Iowa State University in 1974. With more than 40 years of broadcasting experience, he’s had jobs from radio announcer and television news anchor to news director and station manager. He had senior management positions with the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority, South Dakota Public Broadcasting and Mississippi Public Broadcasting. He retired in 2004 as president of the Pennsylvania Public Television Network.
During his career, Miller also taught broadcast journalism at Oklahoma State University and – while heading Mississippi Public Broadcasting – served as president of Mississippi EdNet Institute, a consortium of educational agencies operating a statewide wireless network for learning services.
Nealeigh, whose degrees include a doctorate in human environmental sciences from Oklahoma State University in 1992, teaches courses in family and consumer sciences education, human services and lifespan wellness at CSC. She has served on the CSC faculty since August 1994.
Nealeigh is a frequent presenter at conferences. She’s been a leader in the Nebraska Association for Career and Technical Education. The association presented her an award in 2006 for special services to Nebraska’s FCS teachers of Nebraska. She also was recognized in 2005 with an award for a service-learning course which partners college students with area seniors. While teaching high school in 1978, she was presented the association’s outstanding teacher award.
