Arboretum session to focus on seeds
Volunteers of the Chadron State College Campus Arboretum will meet at the Sandoz Center on Saturday, Feb. 19, for the group’s first “learn and do” event of the year. The session will focus on seeds.
The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, will include seed catalog sharing, seed swapping, packaging and sowing. Volunteers of all ages and experience levels are welcome to take part in the event, including families with children.
“This is the time of year to get seeds started for vegetables and herbs,” said Lucinda Mays, CSC public horticulturist. “We invite anyone interested in sharing their experience growing plants in the High Plains, or those interested in learning more, to join us. Folks that have left over seeds from last year or seed catalogs are encouraged to bring some to the work day to share.”
The event will include packaging seeds harvested from the CSC campus, sowing seeds for indoor germination and sowing in the snow. Volunteers will go home with a hand-packaged packet of flower seeds and a vegetable seedling.
Other Arboretum events this year include pruning, planting, weed removal, seed harvest and clean-up. A nursery field trip also is on the schedule.
