The Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson State Park is offering “traditional family entertainment at its best” with its second show of the season which opens this week.

The playhouse’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” will begin Friday, June 11, at 8 p.m. with follow-up performances Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13, at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.

Based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, “The Wizard of Oz” is about Dorothy Gale and the colorful characters encountered by the young lady and her dog Toto after being swept away by a Kansas tornado. As popular as the story are the songs featured in the production. They include “Over the Rainbow,” Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead,” “If I Only Had a Brain," “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and “If I Were King of the Forest.”

Em Laudeman, who played Irene in the Post Playhouse’s 2009 production of “Hello, Dolly,” is cast in the leading role of Dorothy. Other actors with starring roles in the play are Rob Gretta as the lion, Don Denton as the tin man and Stephan Sabbag as the scarecrow.

“The Wizard of Oz” is scheduled to show 22 times this summer and joins “Pump Boys and Dinettes” on the playhouse’s repertory schedule. “Nunsense” will open June 25 and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” begins July 9.

Ticket reservations may be made by calling the Post Playhouse box office 308-665-1976. The complete schedule and other information may be found at the playhouse’s Web site, www.postplayhouse.com.
