Students produce historical radio series

The Chadron State College Radio Club and students from the CSC introduction to radio course have made a series of programs to highlight seven decades of the college’s history, 1940-2010.

The series, “Flash Forward from Normal, Decades of Rock Music” was created to honor the college’s centennial celebration. Each 15-20 minute segment includes rock music, historical facts about the college, and the history of each decade. The program series launched last week on Chadron radio KVAR 93.7 FM.

“This was a great learning experience for the students because they used their new skills in recording and editing sound with research in the history of the college and the different decades,” said Lucyann Kerry, CSC professor. “It was a challenging project and the students met the challenge and created a wonderful series of programs we can all enjoy.”

The programs run between 6:30-8:30 a.m. each day during drive time and in the afternoon from 3-5 p.m. Hit songs on the program include Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line” from the 1950s, and the Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” from the 1960s. Featured facts and events include who won homecoming king and queen, star athletes, and when new buildings were constructed on campus.

Each student in the Radio Club and course participated in the program narration. Vera Ulitina of Tula, Russia, is the student program manager, Nate Cochran of Chadron and Sarah Dowling of Draper, S.D., are student producers and Kat Davies of Custer, S.D., Julie Davis of Littleton, Colo., Rachel Johnson of Stromsburg and Jocelyn Romey of Oelrichs, S.D., are announcer-disc jockeys.
