Chadron State College received considerable damage from Thursday’s hail storm, but officials say it’s not as bad as they feared – especially considering the extent of other damage throughout the community.

The storm that demolished trailer houses and knocked down a power line near campus broke completely through 50-75 windows and destroyed dozens of other storm windows and screens on college buildings, said Dale Grant, CSC vice president for administration. In addition, a mature spruce tree at the corner of 12th and Main streets fell victim to the strong, swirling winds, as well as numerous tree branches throughout the campus. The CSC maintenance crew has been busy cleaning up the mess of downed leaves and other small debris.

“It looks like we can consider ourselves very lucky,” said Blair Brennan, CSC coordinator of physical facilities.

The college has taken an assertive approach toward replacing its windows in recent years, primarily for energy efficiency. Brennan said those investments are paying off today, as he hasn’t noticed any breakage to the newer dual-paned windows.

“We are still evaluating roof leaks and checking for other storm damages to buildings, but it doesn’t look too bad, so far,” Brennan said. No dollar amount has been placed on the damage.

He said much of the repair work will be completed by the college’s maintenance staff. Because of the crew’s busy schedule, he said the repairs may run past the start of the fall semester in a month.
