Stevens wins third Scholastic Contest in a row
Rapid City Stevens made it three in a row by scoring the most points in the 50th Annual Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday.
Stevens amassed 21 medals, including eight golds, en route to its third consecutive year of winning the championship plaque in Division I. The school has won in the largest division for17 of the past 21 contests dating back to 1988.
Division II’s winner, Alliance, on the other hand, claimed its first win since its Division I title in 1991. The school had seven first-place winners Friday and 11 others who took home medals.
O’Neill , which won the Division II title in 2007 and 2009, claimed the top spot in Division III. Crawford won the Division IV title, as it did in 2008. Anselmo-Merna won in Division V after winning the first-place plaque in Division IV last year.
A total of 1,416 students representing 52 high schools were registered, for the event, which covers nearly every aspect of the curriculum with 46 exams.
Individually, four students won two gold medals. Leading the group was Matt Jones of Rapid City Stevens, who placed first in literature and psychology and added a silver medal in American government.
Matthew Furrow of Mullen won golds in plane geometry and physical education sports knowledge. Alison Gould of Alliance topped the fields in consumer issues and nutrition and family health. Emily Reeves of Rapid City Central placed first in music and English usage.
The seniors who won gold qualify for CSC’s Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for CSC’s 2010-2011 academic year.
Two students besides Jones won three medals. Steven Gates of Stevens won gold in physics, silver in business management decision-making and bronze in business communications and vocabulary. Jerik Victory of Ogallala earned gold in general anatomy and physiology, silver in business information systems and was a member of the third-place Eagle Cook-Off team.
