Public Relations Club spearheads project to serve food pantry

The Chadron State College Public Relations Club is collaborating with a local food pantry to sponsor “Students Serving Hope,” a community outreach lunch Saturday, Dec. 4.

The PR Club is partnering with the Closer to Home food pantry at 630 West Third Street to serve lunch to people in need. The lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The club is seeking volunteers to help prepare and serve food. Students and community members interested in helping may show up at the pantry between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

More information may be obtained by contacting Kristina Harter, the club’s student involvement director, at 719-201-5726 or by visiting the Chadron State College Public Relations Club Facebook page.

The students say they are planning the event in honor of the college’s 100th anniversary, serving as a means for students to “give back” to the community while generating awareness of the CSC Public Relations Club and the public relations program. The campaign also hopes to shine a light on the issue of poverty and homelessness in northwest Nebraska.

“We are hoping to increase awareness of the issue of homelessness and poverty in the area and to let those in need know that Closer to Home food pantry is there to help and provide supportive services,” said Bethany Cook of Hot Springs, S.D., the club member serving as campaign director.

Students Serving Hope is one of several events hosted by the PR Club as a means of improving relationships with the community and raising awareness of the study discipline of PR among students. The club strives to routinely involve itself in the community and seeks projects to enhance their public relations skills. People interested in having the PR club assist with the promotion and planning of an event on campus or in the community may contact the club’s adviser, Lucyann Kerry, at 308-432-6302.

Club member Brittney Deadmond of Rapid City, S.D., said projects such as Students Serving Hope help both the students and the community.

“The Students Serving Hope event is an amazing opportunity for students to get involved in the community and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most,” she said. “I hope that we have a great turnout and that students continue to participate in events sponsored by the PR Club.”
